The Hidden Catch in Your Tuna Sandwich

The Hidden Catch in Your Tuna Sandwich

It’s a staple on most of our shopping lists: tins of tuna from John West or Princes. Tuna is a $3bn global big business with a can in every cupboard. But a report from Greenpeace reveals that large numbers of sea turtles, sharks and other fish are being wiped out by the global tuna industry – and that some of the UK’s best known brands are among the prime culprits.

'Tinned Tuna's Hidden Catch' even suggests that tuna itself is in danger, with species endangered by overfishing. Top selling brands like John West and Princes are 'among the worst at ensuring the fish they sell are caught using sustainable methods'.

Doesn’t mean we have to forego the tuna in our pasta or sandwiches – just reconsider who to buy it from. Greenpeace have come up with a league table of the best and worst tuna retailers according to different sustainability criteria. Sainsbury’s and Coop are at the top – Princes and John West are at the bottom.

Check the tuna league table here and remind the CEO of the company which finished at the bottom of the league table, John West, of the ethics in your shopping trolley here .
