Every day comes news about how the world’s climate may be close to a ‘tipping point’ unless people – especially those in developed countries – begin to live differently. What is less often in the news is that two thirds of the world’s people don’t have enough to eat… while many of the rest of us are worried about our weight.
At Generous we think that while most of the politicians may be in denial, the rest of us should maybe make a start.
In The Year of Living Generously community we aim to inspire each other online with advice and encouragement as we undertake small changes in our everyday choices in order to create a bigger change which benefits everyone.
So if you’re a member of Generous and trying to do your bit, month by month, to live differently, how about recommending Generous to one of your friends to join ?
The more of us taking part, the more of an impact we will have. If you get a friend or two to join and they get a friend or two… who knows, this thing might become contagious!
Join the fray by signing in.

I managed to do this. But I don’t really have much of idea of the uptake.

Sounds like a plan. What would be good would be if the Generous team, when they emailed us, included a short email-within-the-email – explaining what Generous is and how to join – which we could use to mail to others.

Friends of ours are waiting to get back on-line and I think they will join when they do. I am spreading the word to some others too. Hadn’t thought about asking my mum.

Just the thing! We (Gloucester curates)had an excellent training weekend on care for the planet recently with Tim Gorringe, and I did lots of PR for Generous then…Now I can email everyone with details and add this to my actions list. Splendid!

I emailed loads of friends to encourage them to join, but nobody has let me know if they did join. I’ll keep trying to encourage people and hope lots of people will join up.

There’s a chap at work who I keep meaning to tell about this site. This is my cue!
Welling, GB , 12 Mar 2006
I’ve just got my husband to sign up – not that much of a challenge I know as a lot of the actions we take together anyway. But I also emailed details of the generous website to members of my church housegroup and work colleagues. I’m now going to type up an article for publication in our church magazine, so hopefully there’ll be others from Welling & surrounds joining soon!

Still puzzled about how to do this on the website! Kieran’s got himself on as ‘homeless’ because wee don’t understand how to link him to our household. David and Becky would love to join up so if anyone could let us know how to do this (and I suspect this is so embarrassingly easy too!) please let me know!

I’m trying to persuade my sister to join. I’m also going to write an article about the community for my church newsletter (and may be able to get a link from our website), to see if anyone else fancies joining up.
03 May 2006
I will be sending the information about the site to my daughter and I’m sure she will be joining and spreading the news.

We’ve had this as a priority for our community and it’s been exciting to share the generous journey with other local friends, but I’m also amazed at how few of us have actually signed up with the site. There is a tendency to say “I’m recycling already, what’s in this for me?”. This makes me sad, because the best thing about generous is the fact that you’re doing it with other people – this makes you think, encourages you to try new things, and stops you forgetting the commitment you’ve made… TN

I’ve found this easy to drop into coversations. I’m always lobbying friends, family and colleagues about green things, what web sites to look at, shops to shop in, products t use. My fella laughs at me now as I try to mention it in nearly every conversation I have. I have had 1 success so far of a friend who said she’d applied to join.
By the way I think we should all sign up to sustainable electricity suppliers, I use Ecotricity. www.ecotricity.co.uk

Does anyone know if we can put Generous as a link on our own personal websites?
Maidenhead, GB , 03 Oct 2006
Karaokeloverjen:if you go to the ‘Edit my profile’ page there is a nice shiny button that you can use as a link from your site :)

A good friend of mine recommended this site to me yesterday, and today I have recommended it to 2 other friends!

I love this community alreaady and I will be telling everybody I know about it, now I have finished going on about freecycle! I am planning to mention it in our church meeting tommorow during a focus on standing up for justice

We are looking at this to hopefully encourage a whole church project.

Well, I’ve got my husband to join now, and I’m telling lots of people about it, so hopefully a few more will join in.

Have told most of my friends on Facebook & just asked my mum to tell her housegroup, so we’ll see. Brilliant idea though!

We’ve set up a Household for the college in which we live. I’ve spoken with the Eco Rep, who is also “Generous” and we’ve decided to suggest that the students stop using their PCs for FaceBook and start doing something good with the ‘lecy … by living generously! We pray that the uptake will be good, but it may be a softly softly catchy monkey thing!
